The first week we studied a poem about a power struggle, while the following week we studied a poem about a speaker who suffered from loss. This week we analyzed Bright Star, a poem about love and bliss, something we have not studied yet. This just supports the idea of the limitless, creative sandbox of the arts. With so many diverse authors throughout history, I am sure we would never run out of interesting poems to study. However, we do come across topics that we may not be so passionate about. Just from listening to the tone of Andy's voice I can see that he is more passionate about poems by John Keats than Alfred Lord Tennyson. From my experience of this week, I can say that I enjoy love poems more than the other poems we have studied so far.
Since I was very passionate about Bright Star, I would like to expand on the meaning of it on a more personal level. I feel like it's peculiar to think about love because love is something so natural and is expected. After analyzing the roles of the characters in Bright Star, I can see parallels in my relationship with my girlfriend We talked about in class about an observer, a participant, and the receiver of love. In my experience, for most of my life I was an observer. I always saw couples in the hallway holding hands and kissing and I always looked pasted them and told myself "Well that's public display of affection", and I would sort of look down upon them. However, my role of the observer was challenged when I became the participant. I came to an understanding of what love really is. I no longer judge those around me for showing genuine affection to their lover. I am really happy I had the opportunity to learn from Bright Star through the discussions in class because it ultimately made me rethink the value of love and how big of a role it plays in everyone's lives.
