The main focus of this week was studying tragedies. So far, we have only scratched the surface on what a tragedy is. Everything I have learned prior to this week about tragedies, in past classes, was affirmed and refresed. However, I never really learned why we study tragedies until this week. Now, this is an open ended question for anyone, but I would answer it like this: we study tragedies to educate ourselfs of the inveitable. I beleive that tragedies will happen to you and I, regardless what we do to prepare. A personal tragedy is relative. Therefore, we can only learn how to cope with tragedies rather than learn from them. This is one of the conclusions I arrived at for tragedies through studying Aristole and introducty articles about tragides.
Another thing we studied this week was the three writing moves: authorizing, illustrating, and extending. I thought it was intresting I was exercising these three moves while writing essays and presenting talks to the class. Personally I think that I need to hone extending because throughout all my other english classes, I have learned how to cite direct and indirect quotes in forms of writing. I noticed that when I am given a poem of the week essay, I have all these ideas jumbled in my mind of what the poem could be about but I can never pick just one topic to focus on. I always seem to spin the essay one way, one paragrapgh, then another way, in the next paragraph. Only through practicing the extending move more, will I make those nuances.
